Another shock to China, Indian government bans import of color TV

The Indian government has banned the import of color television sets. The aim is to encourage domestic manufacturing and discourage imports of color TVs from other countries, especially China.

The DGFT said in a notification that the import policy for color television has been changed. It has now been moved from free to restricted category. Putting a consignment in a restricted category means that the importer of that consignment will have to get a license from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). DGFT comes under the Ministry of Commerce. Most TV sets in India are imported from China.
